Jan Cleanes (Toni Collette), a janitor and bartender, hires his initially disgruntled wife Brian (Owen Teale) and local accountant Howard Davies (Damian Lewis) to help bring together a local people’s syndicate for raising a foal – what they call the Union. On the race track, he proves more than a match for the multi-million pound horses he comes into contact with – a true working-class champion who sets up his own game. The dream is going to change the lives of everyone in the syndicate, especially Jan. She is everything to her: a friend, a confidant, and an escape from life where the needs of other people always come first.
