Shield walls are ready! Netflix Historical Drama The Last Kingdom, based on Bernard Cornwell’s novel Saxon Stories, has extended its fourth season.
Here’s everything you need to know about the last four episodes of The Last Kingdom series – from the likely release date, the broadcast, the storyline information and the latest news in the series …
The update was announced in December 2018 via The Last Kingdom’s official Twitter page.
In April 2019, Netflix confirmed that ten new episodes had begun filming – and in July 2019, the Instagram page invited fans to “join Uhtred next year via Netflix on Networks as the battle continues” – so it looks like season four is coming 2020.
But at this stage, there is no specific information as to when this might be…
What is the Last Kingdom?
Set in the 9th century AD, the series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, followed by two books each season. Our hero is the son of a Danish-bred Saxon boy, Uhtred Uhtred, after they have captured him and decided to raise him.
Later, Uhtred and the Danes betray that he killed his adoptive father, the eldest of Danish warlord Ragnar. Uhtreds are forced to travel to Wessex, the only one of the seven kingdoms (which make up what we now think of as England) that is not controlled by Denmark.
Upon arrival, he offers his help – including knowledge of Danish battle strategies – to King Alfred of Wessex.
What will happen in season 4 – and who is casting?
The pagan lord, released in 2013, and the next book to be adapted for the series will jump a decade or so – meaning that if Netflix follows the timeline, it will mean a fresh batch of young actors, including Uhtred’s children Gisela, who have all grown up.
Alexander Dreymon plans to return to Bebbanburg as the Uhtred (perhaps a bit greyish), and since the unions between the kingdoms broke, he believes it is time to challenge Uncle Aelfric, played by Joseph Millson.
They have many returning lineups including Ian Hart (dad Beocca), Toby Regbo (Aethelred), Emily Cox (Brida), Timothy Innes (kind Edward), Eliza Butterworth (Aelswith), Mark Rowley (Finan), Millie Brady (Aethelflaed) , Magnus Bruun (Cnut) and Jeppe Beck Laursen (Haesten).
Netflix also confirmed this prime minister in 1973 Stefanie Martini joins the nickname Eadith, “Conquering Aethelred’s New Love.”
Jamie Blackley (Halcyon, if I stay) joins casting as Aethelred’s new right-hand man, Eardwulf.
Is there a trailer for last season 4 of the kingdom?
Not yet – take a look at this room – but behind the scenes we have a first look at season four … here’s a production team that works with actors on night photography:
Where can I catch the last kingdom?
The first two seasons of The Last Kingdom were aired on both BBC and Netflix, but the third season is exclusively available on Netflix after the BBC decided not to continue with the historical drama.
Why can’t I watch the latest kingdom on the BBC?
Although the show began on BBC2 (and BBC viewers in the US for viewers), since the third episode, Downton Abbey’s producers Carnival Films have made it exclusively for Netflix.
